Album Share: The Blue Parrots – Having a Wonderful Time!

blue_parrotssm.jpgFor your listening pleasure we offer you the exciting sounds of swinging cruise ship entertainers The Blue Parrots. Hailing from Stuttgart, Germany, this sextet spent their time entertaining the passengers aboard the S/S Hanseatic during jaunts to the Caribbean, the Orient, and Scandinavia. On this recording, the boys cover a wide variety of tunes ranging from exotica and light jazz to good old American rock and roll. Whether cranking out the riffs to Memphis, Tennessee (sung in German), hooting and whistling up a jungle full of sounds during ‘Yellow Bird’, or just kicking back on ‘Sunday in Amsterdam’, this able bodied group delivers the goods with aplomb. All in all the LP is a fun listen and a cool little slice of 1960s cruise culture. We do have to warn you that the vinyl in question is not of the best quality. Like a lot of cruise ship records we find, it was rather cheaply made and recorded. Fortunately for us, the fun spirit of The Blue Parrots shines through the defects. Have fun listening and as always, Enjoy!

    Hi Francis,

I saw that in your archives you had the Cabbage Patch Christmas album!
This have been a staple of Christmas morning for my wifes’ family for years and we’re hosting christmas this year and I would love to surprise them by
having the album to play. Is there any way you could re-post it or if
I give you an FTP site you could put it there?

It would make a lot of people very happy.

    Please let me know.

    Here is my email:

    Regards, Eric

I also would love to have that Cabbage Patch album. My sister has been asking for it on CD for years.

    Thanks for your help.

    I will ‘third’ that request.

Although I recently obtained a copy on vinyl from ebay to replace the one that my mother wore out, the turntable went belly up right after. I would love to get my hands on the mp3s….

    any luck anyone?

Despite the noisy old vinyl, this is a super fun record! Thank you for sharing this one, and for welcoming it into the Orphange. The Blue Parrots have such strong accents, adding something new to these exotic classics. I was surprised by their lovely handling of “One Note Samba.” Their horns were also a surprise in the “rockin'” numbers. Have never heard “He’ll Have to Go” in German. This record must have made you giggle when it arrived at the Orphanage.

Happy Holidays to the Entire Vinyl Orphange Family

Lots of Love from Your Friends at Oddio Overplay

My father, sax and clarinet player Peter-Paul Sohn, was one of the musicians of “The Blue Parrots”, though he is not on the cover of the LP. The formation was also known, after the band’s leader, as “Walter Rettig Sextett”. They met The Beatles in Hamburg’s “Star-Club”, playing there at the same time. Thank you for making the LP available.
