Album Share: Monroe Calculator Company – It’s A Brand New Ball Game
Our latest offering is this snazzy, up tempo industrial musical that celebrates the strength and innovation of the Monroe Calculator Company. The music was written by Sonny Kippe (pictured at right) with Joe Lapidos supplying the lyrics. The show was produced sometime in the seventies and presented at the company’s annual sales convention.
After an overly lengthly instrumental overture, the Monroe sales staff was treated to a full production that introduced new product lines, boasted about smashing the competition, and reinforced company ideals and values. The salesmen’s egos even got a stroke with the sultry number, ‘Monroe Man’. Who knew that calculator pitch men held such power over the ladies?
Subject matter aside, the show is very well done featuring some top notch arrangements for what sounds like a standard big band supporting a number of singers who professionally deliver the material without a hint of irony. Included in the cast and crew are Broadway vets Willi Burke and Paul Ukena, successful opera tenor Jack Trussel, and dancer/choreographer Hal Leroy. Have fun listening and as always, Enjoy!

I LIVE for the industrial musical! I’ll never take the lowly pocket calculator for granted again.

Thanks so much for this share–it’s an excellent album. There’s a strong lift from “Puff the Magic Dragon” on Track 9–it took me a couple of listens to figure out what they were borrowing.
