Album Share: Monroe Calculator Company – Opportunity / The Monroe Years
If you couldn’t get enough calculator music with our previous offering, here is another industrial musical from the Monroe Calculator Company to satisfy your appetite.
This show, also a Sonny Kippe production, was performed at the company’s 1967 sales convention at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida. Like the other musical written for Monroe, lavish production values and corporate evangelism are the main features of this recording. However, this time around the authors tended to rely more on changing the words to existing songs rather than composing original tunes. For example, lyricist Joey Leroy rewrote the lyrics to the songs ‘Some People’ and ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’ from the musical Gypsy, and re-purposed them as ‘Some Salesmen’ and ’580 – 150 – 570′. ‘Comedy Tonight’ from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum becomes ‘Monroe Means Action’, and ‘The Colonel Bogey March’ does double duty as ‘Monroe’.
While this show may not be as original as ‘It’s a Brand New Ball Game’, it is still a fun listen and it is a must have for all you Monroe Calculator Company completists out there. Have fun listening and as always, Enjoy!
